Registration (FRRO Registration)
FRRO stands for Foreigners Regional Registration Office. It's a government body under Bureau of Immigration, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India responsible for the registration and monitoring of foreigners staying in the country for extended periods. FRRO Registration is a mandatory process for foreign nationals who plan to stay in India for more than 180 days or whose visa is issued for more than 180 days. This registration ensures that the foreign national's presence in the country is accounted for and that they are complying with Indian immigration laws. This registration involves obtaining a Resident Certificate (RC) or a Resident Permit (RP).

How to Apply for FRRO Registration or Any Other Services in the e-FRRO Portal? (Process of Online Application in eFRRO Portal)

To make FRRO registration, one must first create a user ID and password by registering online at the e-FRRO portal. One must have a valid email ID and mobile number in India in order to obtain the one-time password (OTP). After creating the user ID and password, the foreign national can submit an online application by selecting the appropriate service and uploading the requisite documents. Once the application has been successfully submitted, it will be scrutinized by Visa Officers. If necessary, instructions regarding the application, such as fee payment, additional documents required, correction of the selected service, or re-uploading of documents, or request for a personal meeting will be conveyed to the foreigner through email or SMS alerts. After granting the requested service, the certificate will be sent to the registered email, and the applicant can download and keep it.

FRRO Registration Extention
When an RC/RP expires but the foreign national's visa remains valid and they wish to extend their stay in India, they need to apply for a registration extension. This extension can be requested through the eFRRO portal. The process typically involves submitting an online application, providing necessary documents, and paying a fee (if any). The duration of the registration extension is usually granted until the validity of the original visa.
FRRO Visa Extention
When both the RC/RP and visa of a foreign national expire, and they wish to continue their stay in India, they must apply for a visa extension. This process involves submitting an online application to the appropriate FRRO, typically through the eFRRO portal. The application will require providing necessary documents, such as a passport, proof of financial means, and a valid reason for extending the stay. The immigration authorities/FRRO will review the application and decide whether to grant a visa extension. If approved, a visa extension will be issued, allowing the foreign national to continue their stay in India for the specified period. It's important to note that visa extensions are subject to the discretion of the immigration authorities/FRRO and may be granted based on various factors, including the purpose of the visit, the length of the intended stay, and the foreign national's compliance with immigration laws.
FRRO Issuance of New Visa
The FRRO can issue new visas in various scenarios. For example, if a foreign national has a child born in India, they may need to apply for a new visa to include the child on their travel documents. Additionally, Indian nationals who have surrendered their Indian nationality and acquired the nationality of another country may need to obtain a new visa to visit or reside in India. Foreigners from visa-free countries who intend to stay in India for an extended period or engage in specific activities may also be required to obtain a visa. The type of visa needed will depend on the purpose of their visit and the duration of their stay. It's important to note that the specific requirements for obtaining a new visa can vary depending on the individual's circumstances and the country they are from.
FRRO Change Of Address
Foreign nationals residing in India are required to inform the FRRO/FRO of any change in their accommodation address. If the new address falls within the same FRRO/FRO jurisdiction, a simple notification through the eFRRO portal is sufficient. However, if the change involves moving to a different FRRO/FRO jurisdiction, the foreign national must apply for a transfer of their RC/RP. Failure to notify the FRRO/FRO of a change of address within eight weeks can result in penalties. To facilitate the change of address process, the accommodation provider must generate a Form C, which contains essential information about the new address. This form should be submitted along with the online application for the change of address service.
FRRO Change Of Passport
When a foreign national's passport expires or is lost or damaged, and they have a valid visa associated with it, they must apply for a change of passport service. This process involves transferring the existing visa from the old passport to the new one. The foreign national will need to submit an application to the FRRO/FRO along with the new passport and a copy of the old passport (if available). The FRRO/FRO will review the application and process the change of passport request. Once approved, the visa will be transferred to the new passport, allowing the foreign national to continue their stay in India. It's important to note that the process may take some time, so it's advisable to apply for the change of passport well in advance of the expiration date of the old passport.
FRRO Change of Course change of Institute/ Organization/ Hospital
Change of Course or Institute

For foreign students on student visas, changing their course or educational institution requires prior permission from the FRRO/FRO. This typically involves obtaining a no-objection certificate from the original institution and submitting it along with the application for the change.

Change of Organization/ Employer

Foreign nationals on employment visas generally cannot change their employer without obtaining a new visa. However, there are exceptions, such as when the company name changes or undergoes a merger or acquisition. In such cases, the foreign national may be able to obtain permission from the FRRO/FRO to change their organization with appropriate supporting documentation.

Change of Hospital

Foreigners on medical visas may seek permission to change hospitals if they require different treatment or facilities. This process typically involves submitting an application to the FRRO/FRO with justification for the change, such as medical reasons or financial constraints.

FRRO Change of Travel Mode and Port
When a foreign national's travel plans change, they may need to inform the FRRO/FRO of any alterations to their travel mode or port of departure/arrival. This is particularly important if the change affects the validity of their visa or requires modifications to their registration details. To request a change of travel mode or port, the foreign national should submit an online application to the FRRO/FRO with appropriate documentation, such as a copy of the revised travel itinerary or tickets. The FRRO/FRO will review the application and determine if any changes need to be made to the foreign national's visa or registration. It's advisable to submit the application well in advance of the planned travel date to ensure sufficient time for processing.
FRRO Visa Conversion
In certain circumstances, a foreign national may need to convert their existing visa to a different type. This could be due to a change in their purpose of stay, a change in their circumstances, or other relevant factors. To convert a visa, the foreign national must submit an online application to the FRRO/FRO along with the necessary documents, such as a passport, visa, and supporting evidence for the visa conversion. The FRRO/FRO will review the application and determine if the conversion is permissible and if the foreign national meets the requirements for the new visa type. If approved, the visa will be converted, and the foreign national will be issued a new visa sticker or endorsement.
FRRO Return Visa
A return visa is issued to foreign nationals who have completed their intended stay in India and wish to return at a later date. It acts as a re-entry permit, allowing them to re-enter India within a specified period. To obtain a return visa, the foreign national must apply online to the FRRO/FRO when they are in India. They will need to provide their passport, visa details, and evidence of their intention to return to India. The issuance of a return visa is subject to the discretion of the FRRO/FRO and may depend on various factors, such as the foreign national's immigration history and the purpose of their intended visit.
FRRO Exit Permit
An exit permit is a document required by certain foreign nationals before they can depart from India. It serves as a clearance certificate, confirming that the foreign national has no outstanding legal or financial obligations in the country. The requirement for an exit permit varies depending on the foreign national's nationality, visa type, and duration of stay. In some cases, it may be mandatory for all foreign nationals leaving India, while in others, it may only be required for those who have overstayed their visas or have outstanding liabilities. To obtain an exit permit, the foreign national must apply to the FRRO/FRO with appropriate documentation, such as a passport, visa, and clearance certificates from relevant authorities.
FRRO Transfer RC/RP (from one FRRO/FRO to another FRRO/FRO):
When a foreign national moves to a different FRRO/FRO jurisdiction within India, they must apply for a transfer of their RC/RP. This process involves updating their registration records with the new FRRO/FRO and ensuring that their residence status remains valid in the new location. To transfer an RC/RP, the foreign national should submit an online application to the old application for transfer of RC/RP and with new FRRO/FRO with appropriate documentation, such as a passport, visa, and proof of address. The new FRRO/FRO will verify the information provided and process the transfer request. Once approved, the foreign national's RC/RP will be updated with the new jurisdiction, allowing them to continue their legal residence in India.
FRRO Restricted/ Protected/ Prohibited Area Permit
Certain areas in India are designated as restricted, protected, or prohibited due to security, strategic, or environmental concerns. Foreign nationals wishing to visit or work in these areas require specific permits or clearances. To obtain a permit for a restricted, protected, or prohibited area, foreign nationals must submit an application to the relevant authorities, such as the Ministry of Home Affairs or the state government. The application process typically involves providing detailed information about the purpose of the visit, the duration of stay, and any relevant documentation. The issuance of these permits is subject to stringent scrutiny and may be denied if the foreign national's presence is deemed a threat to national security or public order.
FRRO Loss Of Passport
When a foreign national loses their passport while in India, they must report the loss to the nearest police station and obtain a police report. This report is essential for obtaining a replacement passport or travel document. The foreign national should then contact their home country's embassy or consulate in India to initiate the process of passport renewal or replacement. Once the duplicate passport or travel document is issued, the foreign national must apply for a change of passport service with the FRRO/FRO. This involves submitting an online application and providing the necessary documents, including the police report and the new passport or travel document. The FRRO/FRO will review the application and verify the information provided. If the foreign national's visa is still valid, they may be issued a Loss of Passport Certificate, which may or may not include an exit permit, depending on their circumstances. This certificate allows them to either leave India or continue their stay with the new passport or travel document.
FRRO Police Clearance Certificate(PCC)
The Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) is a vital document issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) or Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) in India to verify the conduct and character of foreign nationals residing in the country. It serves as an official record of their stay and is often required when they are exiting India or applying for certain types of visas. The PCC essentially confirms that the individual had no criminal issues during their stay. This certificate is frequently requested by foreign governments or institutions when foreigners need to extend their visa, apply for new visas, or relocate to another country. To obtain a PCC, foreign nationals must submit an online application through the FRRO/FRO portal while they are still in India. The process involves providing necessary documents like passport copies, visa details, and proof of residence. The processing time for the PCC can vary depending on the applicant’s visa type, the duration of their stay, and local regulations. Once issued, the PCC should be submitted to the relevant authorities as part of the foreigner's visa application or registration process.
FRRO Permit Certificate on X-1 Visa
The FRRO (Foreigners Regional Registration Office) provides Permit Certificates for foreign nationals holding an X-1 Visa in India, which is typically issued for long-term stays related to study, employment, or business. The Permit Certificate serves as an official authorization for the visa holder to engage in specific activities, such as studying at an educational institution, working in a registered organization, or conducting business within India. It verifies their legal status and outlines the conditions under which they can stay and operate in the country. To obtain the Permit Certificate, X-1 Visa holders must apply online through the FRRO portal and submit required documents, such as their visa details, passport copies, proof of employment, admission to an educational institution, or business registration. The FRRO reviews the application and ensures compliance with Indian immigration regulations before issuing the certificate. This document is essential for managing legal formalities during the visa holder’s stay in India and may need to be renewed or updated based on changes in their activities or visa status.
