The Medical Visa (MED-1) is a type of visa issued to foreign nationals who wish to seek medical treatment in India. It is specifically intended for individuals whose sole purpose of visiting India is to obtain medical care from established, recognized, or specialized hospitals or treatment centers.
Key Features of Medical Visa
Purpose: Exclusively for medical treatment in India. Medical Documentation: Applicants must submit medical documents that clearly demonstrate the need for treatment and the legitimacy of the medical facility chosen. Change of Hospital: Permission may be granted by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) or Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) on a case-by-case basis, provided a medical certificate from a recognized hospital is submitted. Registration: Foreign nationals staying for more than 180 days are required to register with the FRRO/FRO within 14 days of arrival. Attendants/Family Members: Accompanying family members can obtain a MED-2 visa, which is co-terminus with the patient's MED-1 visa. Minor children may be granted an X-Misc. visa. Conversion: The FRRO/FRO may convert a MED-2 visa to a MED-1 visa or vice versa, subject to certain conditions and the production of a medical certificate

FRRO Registration for Medical Visa
Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) registration is mandatory for foreign nationals holding a Medical (MED-1) Visa for a period exceeding 180 days. If your Medical Visa is valid for more than 180 days, you must register within 14 days of your arrival in India.

Documents for Medical Visa Registration and Visa Extension
Valid Passport:
